Across the country, abortion rights are under attack as a growing number of states are banning abortions outright. Since 2010, other states have quietly passed more than 400 restrictions on abortion care. This is all part of the nationwide assault on reproductive rights.
What we're witnessing now is an accelerated version of the anti-abortion playbook that we've seen for decades: politicians pushing abortion care out of reach, shutting down clinics, and threatening to throw both women and healthcare providers in jail. These assaults have only worsened since the United States Supreme Court overturned the landmark ruling Roe vs. Wade that legalized abortion across the country. This decision goes against the will of the people: 80% of Americans believe that abortion should be legal. This outrageous decision will fuel efforts by state politicians to ban abortion across the U.S., forcing people to travel hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles for care or remain pregnant.
Access to abortion is a human right. Under international human rights law, everyone has a right to life, a right to health, and a right to be free from violence, discrimination, and torture or other cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment. Forcing someone to carry a pregnancy against their will — for whatever reason — is a violation of those rights. Abortion must be legal, safe and accessible for all.
Around the world and specifically in the Americas, people increasingly have access to abortion as a human right. Call on the world to tell the USA not to roll back human rights.
It's time to demand that Congress to act and codify abortion rights into law.
